Artist Statement-
Genre 1- Facebook Page
I composed in this genre because social media is something that almost everyone uses today. I felt that by making a Facebook page, it would appeal to a lot of people and it is a platform that many can use comfortably. I have not composed in this genre for a project before but I do have my own personal Facebook. At the beginning of this project I knew that I wanted to make a social media page but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to do a Twitter, Instagram, or Facebook. When I finally decided, the process of composing this genre wasn’t too difficult. First, I needed to create another Facebook account and put a page together for the event. Then I had to invite some friends to my page and spread the word about the event. Next, I started to post about the event just about every day so it started to become popular and well known. I posted pictures of different yoga positions, I made a countdown until the event, I posted a waiver that participants needed to fill out and more. As I posted more information, more people started asking to join the page, like my posts, ask questions and comment! Finally, I posted the last post asking about any last minute questions and now am ready for the event tomorrow. This genre is “posted” on Facebook which is a real world social media platform that many people have access too. As of now this event is only open to people who frequently come to the Leach gym. However, as the class becomes more popular I plan on shifting the audience from students who workout to anyone between the ages of 18-25 that live in Tallahassee and that is willing to try a new workout experience. This class is normally gaged towards younger, more flexible people since it takes so much balance and stability. Overall, this genre is a really interesting way to showcase a newer way to exercise and should be exciting for anyone who is willing to get involved!
Genre 2- Vending Machine Drawing
I wanted to showcase healthy eating in a different way than what most people would expect. So, I thought that doing a drawing would be different. This is because it is out of my comfort zone and because no one else in my class is doing this, as far as I know. I have composed in this genre before. Throughout middle and high school, I had to present many different posters so I am familiar with drawing, even though I am not good at it. However, I never have turned in just a drawing by itself to be counted as a grade. From the beginning of this project, I knew that I wanted to draw something, I just had to figure out what it was. The inspiration of this genre came from the vending machines in my dorm. I started to eat snacks from them but they made me feel really gross after. So, that is what made me decide to draw the vending machine. I first had to practice sketching a vending machine, and I probably did that about 13 times. Then I researched healthy snacks and brands to decide what I was going to put into the machine. Next I had to figure out what the display of snacks should look like inside of the machine. I also picked the four main snacks I wanted to focus on drawing larger. Finally, I put the whole machine together and drew the final product. This is going to be “posted” in the dorms right next to the other vending machines. The audience that I want to reach is school administrators. This is because I feel like it is important for them to care about what their students eat. Eating healthy leads to better academic outcomes. If they start to use healthy vending machines in their schools, it will have an overall positive benefit on all the students. I have never seen a healthy vending machine before so I am excited to see what people’s opinions are on it!
Genre 3- Sidewalk Chalk
The third topic that I wrote about in my research paper was body image. I thought that a really good way to discuss this would be through a lecture that a local dietitian or nutritionist would conduct. I chose to do sidewalk chalk because I feel like that is something that a lot of people would see. Also, I believe that the use of chalk is very friendly and it’ll make the lecture look more laid back and entertaining. I knew that I wanted to present the topic of body image through a lecture but I wasn’t sure which genre I was going to promote it with. After debating, I finally decided to use sidewalk chalk. The process wasn’t really complicated, I just had to decide where the best place would be to write this. I first went to CVS and bought different colored chalk. Then I had to figure out where I was going to put it. I finally decide to “post” this in front of the Leach Gym. This is because I feel like most people that would be interested in the event go to the gym. Also, many people have to cut through the gym to get to different places on campus which makes it a popular area. Next, I had to decide what I was going to write on the ground. I decided to write in big capitalized letters: Body Image Lecture in HCB 101 on Friday April 20th at 2pm. The audience I wanted to direct this towards is freshman living on campus. This is because I believe that as freshman there are a lot of stereotypes being thrown at you, but it is important to love yourself and your own body. So, this lecture would help teacher younger, newer students this concept.
